Appetizer: Grilled dates wrapped in turkey pastrami.

nwafoodie turkey bacon grilled dates appetizers

Yeah, it tastes even better than it looks.

Prepping these medjool date appetizers and grilling them until they are bubbling with fragrant aromas is so quick and easy it is almost a sin.

The hardest part is stopping yourself from devouring them all yourself.

Do you have a party with friends or a family get-together coming up soon?

Why not make these?

Grilled dates wrapped in {fake} bacon appetizer
Source: nwafoodie (inspired by Table Mesa)
Serves: 10-12 people

Ingredients

3oz Gorgonzola crumbled cheese
4oz cream cheese
20-24 Medjool dates
12 very thin slices of smoked turkey pastrami (or turkey bacon) from the deli counter of your local market

Instructions
  1. In a small bowl, mix together the Gorgonzola and cream cheese until creamy consistency.  A spoon works nicely.
  2. With a small paring knife, cut slits in the dates from side to side, exposing the pit.  Remove the pit and stem.
  3. Stack the pastrami and cut lengthwise. You will now have 24 strips.
  4. With a butter knife, fill the insides of the date with the cheese mixture and wrap with a piece of pastrami and set aside.
  5. One you have wrapped the dates turn on your grill.  If you do not have a gas grill, be sure to have your BBQ warmed and ready to go when you start.  Otherwise, pour yourself a glass of something nice and chill for a while.  You will want it nice an hot for this appetizer!
  6. Place your grill pan on the grill.  If you do not have a grill pan, use a piece of aluminum foil and poke holes in it.  You should really get a grill pan, by the way.
  7. Using heat-resistant tongs, place each date in your grill pan or on your aluminum foil.  Wait a few minutes and turn them over until the cheeses start running out.
  8. Remove from heat and plate.  Turn off grill and enjoy!

Eat well, my friends.  Eat well.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for three great years.  Here’s to next year!

Are you ready for the grand finale?

Today’s grand finale giveaway comes courtesy of Country Outfitters, an all-encompassing website for all things boots, boots, boots, and more boots.  Country Outfitters is based here in beautiful Northwest Arkansas and they ship throughout the United States.  In May I received a free pair boots from Country Outfitters as part of my participation in Bean2Blog at P.Allen Smith’s home.  We were given the chance to pick out boots from their website and I gravitated towards the leather Ariat riding boots.  I fell in love with the Ariat Auburn boot in Diesel Chocolate riding boots.  The workmanship, quality, and comfort exceeded expectations. Believe me, it was hard to chose with so many options.  Now, in just a few short weeks I am moving into my new home with a new yard just BEGGING me to prep a garden and build a compost pile.  I have my eye on a pair of gardening boots that I am going to buy from them.

Prize:

One lucky person will get their * very own* pair of boots using an $150 Country Outfitter gift card. That’s right, any ol’ pair your little heart desires. $150.

Contest ends next Thursday, September 20th at midnight (CDT).  I will pick a winner via randomizer.

Eligibility:

IMPORTANT:  Entering this contest is a different than the last six days.

1. In order to participate, you MUST click here and submit your email address to Country Outfitter (you may receive occassional emails from them).

2. Leave a comment here on the blog letting me know you submitted your email to Country Outfitter.

Full Disclosure:  As I mentioned above, Country Outfitter, a retailer of Ariat boots, gave me these Ariat riding boots for my participation in Bean2Blog in May.  We all got free boots!  I love that they are based here in Northwest Arkansas and I will definitely be buying my gardening boots from them very, very, very soon.

Anniversary giveaway #6: Locally-roasted Lewis & Clark whole bean coffee.

nwafoodie coffee

***** Winner update:  Elizabeth Toll, lucky #11 and Undernehr, lucky #12 both won a bag of Lewis & Clark coffee!  Congratulations ****

Hellooo Wednesday.

Welcome to Day 6 of this lovely, lovely, week of thank you giveaways.  You still have time to participate in Day 2, 3, 4, and 5.  It feels great that this blog has turned 3 years old.

Today’s giveaway comes courtesy of Lewis & Clark Provisions Co. and their line of whole bean coffee inspired by the great outdoors. This deeeeeeply rich coffee is bought in bulk directly from farms in Guatemala, instead of going through a coffee broker.  This way they ensure the farmer is getting his fair share and they have first hand knowledge about the quality and freshness of the coffee beans.  Roasted in Fayetteville by a horticulturalist at the UofA, it is not uncommon for these beans to go from farm to shelf in less than two weeks.  2 weeks!!  Currently there are four coffee bend offerings:  Yellowstone Base Camp Blend (light roast), Continental Divide (medium roast), Missoula (medium roast), and Gunnison (dark roast). Lewis & Clark coffee is available at all three Lewis & Clark locations, Bentonvile Harps, Fayetteville Harps, Harber Meadow Harps, and the Pinnacle White Oak Station.

Prize:

Two (2) lucky someone’s will be receiving a bag of whichever blend they desire, light, medium, or dark.  You call it!

Anniversary giveaway #4: Celebrity Chef John McLemore {signed} cookbook!

nwafoodie Dadgum thats good book masterbuilt

*** Winners update:  Lucky #6, Christy, and lucky #9, Ally, have both won a signed cookbook!  Christy, your husband is going to love you for this and Ally, maybe your marinated and grilled veggie salad will be in his next cookbook??? Congrats you two, and thanks John McLemore for taking care of us! ***

Isn’t this a fun week of giveaways?

Welcome to Day 4 of nwafoodie’s annual anniversary week of giveaways!  We are more than half way through a week of daily giveaways, as my way of thanking you for being my blogfriend. I think you will enjoy Day 1, 2, and 3, if you haven't already checked them out.

Today’s gift comes courtesy of John McLemore, chef and author of two smoking, frying, and grilling cookbooks titled,  DADGUM That’s Good and DADGUM That’s Good, Too!”  You might think that cookbooks with a phrase like that would be, well, no-so-foodie.  Wrong you would be!  After his team contacted me about his cookbook, I immediately looked into it and realized it is just the missing cookbook I need on my bookshelf.  I asked for extras because it just might be yours, too.  Are you into grilling?  How does Balsamic Rib-Eye Steak Sandwiches sound?  Or Grilled Peaches and Plums with Honey-Citrus?  Are you into frying?  Thanksgiving is just around the corner and you KNOW this is the year you are going to do that deep-fried turkey.  How about a recipe called Garlic and Herb Deep-Fried Turkey?  Are you into smoking?  THIS is going to be my new Fall/Winter food technique!  How awesome does Smoked Chicken Tenders, Smoked Mac & Cheese sound?  There is even a recipe from Arkansas own Governor Mike Huckabee’s Smoked Tenderloin. If you are on Pinterest, John has pinned a bounty of recipes and ideas on his boards.

Full Disclosure:   I received my very own copy of this cookbook (and yes, it is awesome!!) and two Arkansas Razorback lapper trays for tail-gaiting (I gave these to my friend Rachel's son, Colton, who is a crazy hog fan).  But wait, there's more... I even got a special treat when he was in town for the Cabella's grand opening day.  I got treated to breakfast with him and Alicia McGlamory, Marketing Guru for Masterbuilt (John is CEO).  They were so completely personable, that I am now a loyal fan to their company and the grilling, smoking, frying products they make.  Okay, maybe not frying (that's just not who I am) but smoking - yes!  John and Alicia surprised me with a Masterbuilt Electric Smoker.  Let's just say that I plan to share with you exactly how easy it is to smoke (and yes, use his recipes as a guide and create my own, of course).  Now, if I could just finish remodeling my home and move in so I can get started.  Stay tuned...

Welcome to Day 3 of nwafoodie’s annual anniversary week of giveaways!  Since it’s my-blog-turned-three anniversary week, you deserve seven days of thank you giveaways.  Have you checked out Day 1 and Day 2 yet?

Today’s gift comes courtesy of Crepes Paulette, the best food truck in Northwest Arkansas, in my humble opinion.  What makes Crepes Paulette so utterly out-of-this world?  They melt in your mouth, that’s why!  This is an authentic French crepe cart, baby.  The real stuff.  They put the “ooo” in oolala!  Paula and her husband Frederick, are the owners of this downtown Bentonville icon (the truck even has a name, Madam Poupon).   Frederick is French-born, a chef, and the two of them are charming, adorable, and real. If you have never had a crepe before, now is your chance to have a savory crepe of your choice (think eggs, or spinach, or salsa, or mustard, yes, definitely mustard) and you also get a sweet crepe of your choice (truthfully, you must have one with nutella, it would be a shame if you didn’t try this one).

If you drove past this scene... wouldn't you want to check it out?
